About the Artwork

The reference of this piece is a photo of a Philippine Eagle named Girlie, a one-eyed queen, she has been shot in her right eye and trapped by a poacher way back in 1982. She was rescued and brought to the DENR, where she was later transferred to the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao to serve as breeding stock.

After decades of not producing eggs, Girlie was transferred to Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in 2009 to help educate people about the plight of these majestic but endangered feathered beauties. As of 2025, Girlie is reportedly 45 years old and can still be seen in her 800-square-meter home in Quezon City.

Although the reference, Girlie was blind in her right eye, I added the eye to see what she would've looked like if she hadn't been shot and gotten blinded.

A mix of dark earthy browns with touches of white creates a strong contrast, emphasizing the regal presence of the bird. The muted tones and lifelike details convey a sense of awe, imparting a majestic and solemn mood.
