This painting is based on a photograph I took last year. It shows the buko vendors our family has grown up with. Every morning, they stop by just outside our sari-sari store, and my parents would buy from them.

In the heart of a vibrant Ivatan village, a scene unfolds, rich with culture and communal spirit. The sun gently bathes the landscape in warm, golden light, illuminating the faces of the Ivatan people gathered together. Their expressions convey a deep sense of purpose and joy as they engage in the time-honored tradition of preparing "vunung," a cherished food integral to their heritage.

Referring to local Philippine-made ice cream, the word sorbetes is from the Spanish sorbete, meaning sorbet or sherbet. The man who sells ice cream is called a sorbetero.

Health workers are considered service warriors. They play a crucial role in society, especially during challenging times like the global health crisis. Their dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts in providing healthcare services are exceptional. 

Filipino values and ethics show respect to the elderly by saying "po" at "opo"--the youth surrendering to our elderly people.

It depicts children from the poorest of the poor, sharing food as they eat. With a stray dog beside them, they share food as they share love.

"Hungit" means to feed (subo in Tagalog). A depiction of love that is shared from oneself (Ako-first person) to others (Imo-second person) and (Iya-third person).

Roderick Columnas Macutay is a Filipino mural artist and contemporary painter, known for his distinctive subject of surreal portraits of humans, robots, cyborgs, android-like creatures, and his signature color of monochrome blue usually with a vibrant accent color. His works range from mural paintings to oil paintings and illustrations. Roderick studied fine art painting for four years at the University of Santo Tomas and graduated in 1992. Having trained with Angono Masters, Roderick has always been dead-on in his critique and rendering of the way the spirit and science come to terms. His most enduring work is a mural that won the Grand Prize for the “100 Years of Filipino Migration in Hawaii” Competition at SM Mall of Asia in 2006. He had his first Solo Exhibit at The Big and Small Art Co. at SM Megamall in 2008.

I visualize "Sawyer" as looking elegant and having the freedom to play with nature.  The person who will adopt Sawyer as a companion will be delighted with her.

The painting depicts a boy urinating while simultaneously gazing at the trees in front of him as if his free-form and organic urine were painting the geometric-patterned wall. It puts forth the idea that even in our concrete and geometric world, nature consistently prevails amid the dominating "straight-line" perspectives.

I like how the pink and purples harmonized with the dark browns, giving a relaxing feeling.

This is the product of several exercises on drawing and painting hands. 

Hands have always been an intimidating subject. After many failures, I finally mustered the confidence to paint it on canvas, using the material I'm least good at. This is a result of self-improvement. I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed learning and succeeding with this piece.

A simple life of a family

The painting, "The Purrfect Rivalry," depicts a classic clash of nature with a modern twist. A sleek, sophisticated cat, tail elegantly curled, sits poised before an elegant, modern laptop.
