This traditional dress for women was called the "traje de mestiza."

This painting represents women in our society fighting for their rights and celebrating equality.

Like most of us, they go out every day to earn an honest living the best way they can. A road nuisance to many, but to many more, it provides mobility. But times are changing, and the reign of the ‘king of the road” seems to be coming to an end as more practical modes of transport rapidly grow in numbers, signifying the end of an era. The jeepney is an age-old icon representing Pinoy's artistry and adaptability deserves to be remembered and immortalized.

I took some inspiration from a photograph found in a book titled "Lucon et Palaouan; six années de voyages aux Philippines" (1886) by the Frenchman Alfred Marche.

The American writer George Waldo Browne used the same photograph in his "The Pearl of the Orient: The Philippine Islands" (1990), but he simply captioned it "Mestizos."

I've been studying Baroque style lately, and that is also my inspiration for this piece.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," according to the well-known saying. Yet, it is only today our eyes need to make some effort to find beauty in so many faces. But when it comes to the Filipiñanas of the past, their appearance was unquestionably pure. One can be sure these beauties are as real as it gets.

This wonderful subject is not just an ordinary model or someone we hire to pose nude to become our subject. Her name is Maricar, and she was my lover.

She wanted me to sketch her nude. At first, I thought she wanted a piece of work, but when I finished the sketch, she gave it to me as a gift for my coming birthday.

I kept it safe all this time, hoping one day I could hang it on a wall for my art show. It's one of my favorite pieces with a lot more stories to tell.

A mother’s warm embrace, a gentle caress, while humming a soothing melody will never fail to lull a baby to sleep. A loving tribute from an admitted mama’s boy.
