Manila, Philippines— In a vibrant tribute to its storied past, San Miguel Pale Pilsen celebrates its 135th anniversary with a limited-edition “Balik Tanaw” art can. Designed by renowned Aklanon maximalist artist Francis Nacion, the can honors the beloved Filipino beer’s legacy and deep connection to the country’s heritage.
The commemorative release highlights San Miguel Pale Pilsen’s brewing excellence, which dates back to 1890—just four years before national hero Jose Rizal began writing his revolutionary novel, “Noli Me Tangere.”
Established under a Spanish Royal Charter as La Fabrica de Cerveza San Miguel, the company was the first brewery in Southeast Asia to produce and bottle beer, setting a precedent for quality that continues today.
A testament to its early success, the beer had already dominated 88% of the Philippine market by 1913. Its popularity quickly spread, leading to its first exports to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Guam just a year later.
It also reached the U.S. troops and Filipino soldiers in Korea during World War II, and expanded markets in Hawaii, Okinawa, and Spain in 1953.
In the Philippines, the brand has been a symbol of fond connections, forging friendships, and serving delightful experiences and unforgettable moments, such as family get-togethers, street parties, and other large-scale celebrations.
On the other hand, the artwork, titled “Balik Tanaw” (Looking Back), is a vibrant tapestry of scenes depicting old Manila, classic family celebrations, all rendered in Nacion’s distinctive maximalist style.
