Q&A with Matthew Bauzon
-
Why do you create art?
I make art to create something that people or even an individual may relate to emotionally.
-
What does your art aim to say?
My art portrays an emotion that people can relate to.
-
Why do you make this type of art?
My art style involves the use of pencil, which is one of the most accessible mediums. I will then mix pencil with acrylic and oil in an abstract style--not to put colors on the subject but to incorporate the theme.
-
How do you make it?
My inspiration is the emotions I wish to portray. I try to find the right word and a suitable model to do so. Once settled, I start by drawing the reference, trying to capture the theme. Once the portrait is done, I incorporate additional “tattoos” and “symbols” with their specific meanings to strengthen the work. Then finally, the abstraction would solidify the emotion and the entirety of the art piece.

What were some of the challenges you faced as an artist?
Like most artists, some of the challenges would eventually be a lack of inspiration and sometimes a lack of motivation. But the important thing to remember, in times like these, is one’s true love in making art. Through undying passion and effort, one can overcome challenges.
