Q&A with Maria Krista Hubac
-
Why do you create art?
Creating art is my catharsis because it's a form of expression of the many things or ideas that flow in my mind. It represents my most profound thoughts that words cannot explain or express.
I became an artist because most of my family or relatives were also into the arts. There's no right or wrong in art. It allows me to be myself no matter what judgment other people may say.
-
What does your work aim to say?
It represents my thoughts, emotions, and state at the moment when I made it. It also reminds me of how I was able to walk through it.
-
Why do you make this type of art?
For now, I'm in the process of exploring until I could find my style. I use acrylic as a medium a lot, and I'm trying to use other mediums, such as watercolor and gouache.
-
How do you make it?
I start to paint along with a song that gets me. It could be a pop song or a piece of classical music that blends well with what I feel at the moment. When a song or a specific scenario touches me, I could finish an artwork in about three hours to three days.

What were the challenges you faced as an artist?
The struggle was acquiring the art materials as they are expensive and hard to find from where I reside (Malita, Davao Occidental). Sometimes, I struggled when insecurity hits me, especially when I couldn't learn a particular style to the point of frustration and disappointment.
