About the Artwork

This piece was done with two voices arguing inside my head. One sagely says, "You must learn the proper techniques of painting landscape art. You must do it in plein air. Watch tutorials and copy from real life." The other one shouts, "Nonsense! Paint the landscapes in your head! Technique and reference be damned!" Guess who always wins?

Hoche graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Painting from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in 1995. His creative process is one of exploration, often in abstract and landscapes. He had held various exhibits, with his latest at the GSIS Museum of Art, titled “Start at Some Point."

He paints in oil and watercolor, and he never knows exactly what it will look in its finished stage because he often changes directions. He likes the fact he's often surprised at what he comes up with. It’s like embarking on an uncertain adventure, where the destination is not always what he hoped for.
