About the Artwork
The Quiapo Church is a 1933 replacement of an older structure destroyed by fire. One of Manila's best-known landmarks, Quiapo is the Black Nazarene's home. The religious image of Christ is believed to be miraculous. The life-size statue, carved from ebony, was first installed in Quiapo in 1767.
Through the use of soft earthy tones, autumnal foliage, and a detailed architecture against a bright sky, a sense of peace and calmness is evoked.
