About the Artwork

Confined within the image we built for ourselves, we try our hardest to maintain a facade for others. Seeing people's lives curated on their various platforms, we also tend to get anxious and curious about what other people may think of us. We therefore create an image that's similar to what's currently fashionable to cope with.

Inspired by Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," I portrayed how it must feel to be in this modern urban life where the individual is overshadowed by the roles and contributions they have to make for a society that cares only for themselves.

Muted earthy tones and strong use of shadows create an eerie atmosphere. The hyper-realistic portrayal of the insect in an ordinary domestic setting subverts expectations, generating tension and discomfort.

Regino is a painting graduate from the University of Santo Tomas College of Fine Arts and Design.

The kind of art he desires to create is the kind that evokes not just a specific type of emotion, feeling, or mood but the kind that elicits questions. Questions that challenge our understanding of ourselves and of the world. However, he may need to be more capable of expressing or comprehending the right questions to ask.

Further, the goal is to be as inclusive in his art as possible, not to be obscure but literal. Just as any other norm we come to accept in our society, it may be easily shrugged off for what it is, but challenging what is normalized helps us as individuals, as a society, and as humans evolve.
