Q&A with Patricia Guinto

  • Why do you create art?

I have been creating art since I was still young. I believe I got this talent on my mother's side, but only her male siblings are good at it, so my family is always impressed when they see my artworks. At first, I create art because this is my only therapy when I feel lonely and don't have anyone to talk to. I paint and draw what I feel most of the time then throw the negative feeling away. I knew that my art must only speak about hope and fulfillment, so I try to make artworks that inspire and are beautiful.

  • What does your art aim to say?

My art revolves around florals and gold leaves. It represents hope, wisdom, strength, love, and new beginnings.

  • Why do you make this type of art?

I love creating this kind of artwork because it also inspires me to move forward and begin anew. If you fail today, you can try again tomorrow. My favorite medium is watercolor and gold leaf. I've been using watercolor since long ago, and it's just so natural to use and look at. I can't say I have already found my style as I am still learning and growing. But for me, whatever the style is, every artwork is unique.

  • How do you make it?

I get inspired when something hits my mind, or something good happens to me that day. I draw when something catches my attention, especially when I see something beautiful, not the things but the happenings around me. It only takes me an hour or two to finish an artwork, except for the gold leaf because I need to dry up the gold first.

  • What were some of the challenges you faced as an artist?

Until now, I'm facing challenges as an artist. I wanted to be a full-time artist, but art is not an essential thing that people will buy often, and I'm not a famous artist they will want to buy my art for their collections. But art makes me happy; It gives me the freedom to express myself, especially when I can't speak it through myself. It's a bonus if someone buys my artwork. I want to see that people will take care of my art to cherish until it becomes old--after 10, 20, or 50 years. That way, my art will finally have the value that it deserves.
